Big Buddha Phuket

Iconic 45-meter marble statue with panoramic views

The Big Buddha is one of Phuket's most iconic and revered landmarks. Standing 45 meters tall atop Nakkerd Hill at 400 meters above sea level, this magnificent white Burmese marble statue watches over the southern part of the island. Visible from many viewpoints across Phuket, the Big Buddha is both a spiritual center and one of the island's most visited attractions. Visit other Buddhist temples or explore Old Phuket Town for more cultural experiences.

About the Big Buddha

Officially known as Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha, this impressive statue sits in the Maravija (attitude of meditation) position. The construction began in 2004 and is an ongoing project funded entirely by donations. The statue is made of white Burmese marble, which gleams brilliantly in the tropical sun and can be seen from Kata, Karon, and Chalong areas.

What makes the Big Buddha truly special is the panoramic 360-degree views from the hilltop. On a clear day, you can see Kata, Karon, Chalong Bay, Phuket Town, and even as far as Phi Phi Islands. The sweeping vistas of the Andaman Sea and Phuket's lush interior make the journey worthwhile even beyond the spiritual significance.

How to Get There

By Motorbike or Car

The easiest way to reach Big Buddha is by renting your own transport. From Chalong Circle, follow the signs to Big Buddha. The road winds uphill with some steep sections. There's ample free parking at the top. The drive takes about 15 minutes from Chalong or 20 minutes from Kata/Karon beaches.

By Taxi or Grab

Taxis from Kata, Karon, or Chalong typically cost 300-500 THB one way. Most drivers will wait for you (arrange a price beforehand). Using the Grab app is often cheaper. Budget 500-800 THB for a round trip with waiting time.

By Tour

Many island tours include Big Buddha as a stop. Half-day tours combining Big Buddha with Wat Chalong and viewpoints typically cost 800-1,500 THB per person. This is convenient if you don't want to rent your own transport.

By Tuk-Tuk

From nearby beaches, you can hire a tuk-tuk for around 600-800 THB return with waiting time. Negotiate the price clearly before departing, including wait time.

Dress Code and Etiquette

As a Buddhist religious site, visitors must dress respectfully:

  • Cover shoulders: No tank tops, sleeveless shirts, or bare shoulders
  • Cover knees: No shorts, short skirts, or revealing clothing
  • Remove shoes: Before entering any building or climbing the base
  • Be respectful: This is an active religious site, speak quietly
  • Sarongs available: Free sarongs provided if you need to cover up
  • Photography: Allowed, but be respectful of worshippers

Visitor Tips

☀️ Beat the Heat

Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday heat. The hilltop can be 5-10 degrees hotter with little shade. Bring water and sunscreen.

📸 Photography

Best photos are in early morning or late afternoon light. The sunset views are spectacular. Drone photography is not permitted.

👕 Come Prepared

Bring appropriate clothing or pick up a sarong. Many visitors forget the dress code. Free sarongs are available but often worn out.

⏱️ Time Needed

Allow 45-60 minutes to explore properly. 30 minutes minimum if rushed. Time it right to catch either sunrise or sunset for amazing views.

🌤️ Weather

Check weather before going. Cloudy days offer fewer views. Rain makes the site slippery. Windy days provide refreshing breezes but can be strong.

🏪 Facilities

Small snack shop and toilets available. Limited food options, so eat before or after. Bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated.
