Accommodation Options

Patong offers the widest range of accommodation in Phuket, from backpacker hostels to 5-star beachfront resorts. Beach Road properties command premium prices for ocean views. Sois (side streets) off the main road offer better value while keeping you close to the action. Book well in advance for high season (December-February). Areas like Kalim (north end) provide a quieter alternative while remaining walkable to central Patong.

Beach Safety & Swimming

Lifeguards patrol Patong Beach during daylight hours (8 AM-6 PM). Red flags indicate dangerous conditions - do not swim when posted. The beach has a gradual slope making it suitable for all swimming levels. Rip currents can occur, especially during monsoon season (May-October). Always swim between the flags where lifeguards maintain watch. Beach vendors sell inflatable toys, but these should not be relied upon for safety. Jellyfish are rare but possible; vinegar is available at lifeguard stations if needed.

Water Sports & Activities

Patong Beach is headquarters for water sports in Phuket. Jet ski rentals cost 1,000-1,500 THB for 30 minutes. Parasailing runs 1,500-2,000 THB for 10-15 minutes of flight. Banana boat rides accommodate groups for 400-600 THB per person. Kayaks and paddleboards available for 300-500 THB per hour. Beach massage providers offer hour-long Thai massages for 300-400 THB. Prices are somewhat negotiable, especially during low season or if booking multiple activities. Ensure vendors have insurance and proper equipment before participating in motorized activities.

Getting Around Patong

Most of Patong is walkable, though the heat makes short distances feel longer. Tuk-tuks are available but notoriously expensive and refuse to use meters - expect 200-300 THB for short trips within Patong. Motorcycle taxis (100-150 THB) offer quicker travel through traffic. Grab and Bolt apps work in Patong, offering fair metered prices. Motorbike rentals (200-300 THB/day) provide freedom but traffic is chaotic and accidents common. Songthaews (local buses) run to nearby beaches for 30-50 THB but routes and schedules can be confusing for visitors.

When to Visit Patong

Peak season (December-February) brings perfect weather, calm seas, and maximum crowds. Prices spike and beaches fill with tourists. Shoulder season (November and March-April) offers good weather with fewer crowds and better deals. Low season (May-October) sees frequent rain and rough seas, but dramatic discounts on accommodation and nearly empty beaches. Many businesses close or reduce hours during monsoon months. For nightlife and energy, high season delivers. For value and space, consider shoulder or low season despite weather trade-offs.
